Our tour begins at Fort James, located at the entrance to St. John’s Harbour. Dating back to 1706, Fort James was built by the British to help defend the harbour against the threat of French attack. The fort was later equipped with dozens of guns and served as an important part of Antigua’s coastal defence system. Today, visitors can explore the remaining fortifications, see the historic cannons, and enjoy beautiful views across St. John’s Harbour and the surrounding coastline. (Wikipedia)
From Fort James, we continue along the coast to Dickenson Bay, one of Antigua’s popular beaches. Take in the scenery, enjoy the coastal views, and capture some beautiful photographs along the way.
We then make our way to Fort Barrington, overlooking Deep Bay and the entrance to St. John’s Harbour. Fort Barrington played an important role in protecting the harbour and served as a signal station to warn forces around the island of approaching attacks. The site has a fascinating military history dating back to the 17th century. In 1666, French forces invaded Deep Bay and captured the fort, and it was later reinforced as Antigua continued strengthening its coastal defences. (Visit Antigua & Barbuda)
