🏝️ Antigua Has a Story — And We're Here to Tell It
Antigua is more than beautiful beaches and sunshine. Our island has a deep and fascinating history.
People have lived on Antigua for thousands of years. The earliest known settlers arrived thousands of years ago, followed by Arawakan-speaking peoples and later Kalinago communities. Christopher Columbus sighted Antigua in 1493 during his second voyage and gave the island the name Santa Maria la Antigua. Permanent English settlement came later, in 1632.
And from there, Antigua's story continued through colonial settlement, agriculture, sugar production, slavery and emancipation, military history, and eventually the development of the tourism industry that welcomes visitors from around the world today.
That's the Antigua I want you to experience — not just the postcard, but the story behind the postcard.
🌾 Betty's Hope — Where Sugar Was King
One of the places I love taking guests is Betty's Hope, one of Antigua's most important historic sugar estates.
The estate was established around 1650 and later came under the ownership of the Codrington family in 1674. It became one of Antigua's major sugar plantations and represents an important — and painful — chapter of our island's history, including the system of slavery that supported the sugar economy.
Sugar became central to Antigua's economy, and places like Betty's Hope help us understand how the island developed long before tourism became our major industry.
When I take you there, I don't want you to simply see old windmills.
I want you to understand the story.
🌅 Shirley Heights — The View You Can't Miss
Then there's Shirley Heights, one of Antigua's most spectacular viewpoints.
Standing high above English Harbour, Shirley Heights gives you an incredible panoramic view of the harbour and surrounding coastline. The military lookout was developed as part of Antigua's defensive system, with signal systems used to warn of approaching ships.
It's one of those places where you can stand, look around, and simply say:
"Wow… this is Antigua."
And trust me — you'll want your camera ready!
🌊 Devil's Bridge & The Wild Side of Antigua
We also take you to places such as Devil's Bridge, where you can experience the dramatic natural beauty of Antigua's eastern coastline.
This is where we get away from the ordinary tourist route and allow you to see another side of our island — the rugged coastline, the waves, the landscape, and the natural forces that have shaped Antigua over time.
